Welcome to Garry & Maria's
"Our Territory"

A look at the Northern Territory's Katherine Region & beyond in Australia's Outback.

Photo of Florina Road at Rowlands Quarry / Sandevos store on Tuesday 4.00PM 23DEC03 this vehicle is coming back from Town. Many people had been wading/swimming across.

After a nail biting day & night on the 22Dec03 as the remnants of Ex Tropical Cyclone Debbie wandered South over Katherine & positioned itself on top of Tindal for at least 5 hours dropping 284mm of rain, before slowly moving off again to the South West.

As always, this site was updated hourly as news came to hand on Tindal Creek and other hot spots in the Katherine region.
At least now , all the people looking to Travel to Darwin for Xmas can get out.

Smoke rising over Katherine Friday 12 September 2003

With the Dry Season really kicking in During September expect to see a few more fires around in the region.

It is unfortunate for the air we all breathe as these fires will burn hotter than in the earlier months of the year. These fires will burn darker at this time of year as they burn the greenery out of the trees leaves and send the carbon skyward. What is left is a sky laden with carbon & carbon dioxide and no trees below to rework it back into oxygen.

Don't get me wrong......I've back burned every part of Katherine for years a few years ago when I did my time as a Firie & believe in fuel/hazard reduction. But I think it would be nicer to do it in patches & get the trouble spots out of the way earlier in the year (April-May) (not always easy).

It's just better for all of us when a fire creeps along through the spear grass a few feet high during a cool April-May evening when we still have a bit of a breeze about. Better for residents, trees, animals, & Tourists who are usually confronted with a napalmed scene. Back in 1995-6? there were about 611 fire brigade callouts in Katherine Township (about 420 grass fires) and about 3 of those fires were attributed to an angle-grinder, a bird zapped in power lines, & a shorted power cable to a bore. The rest were just careless? people.
So if its going to happen, how about get it over with early in the year.

Cane toad collecting
Always good for Cane Toad races to entertain the visitors

The warmer weather is starting to arrive, and with it the mongrel cane toads are showing themselves in force.
We had 24 in the fish pond at one time over the weekend (along with others now all disposed of totaling 109 for a few nights walk around the yard.)
We have not seen a goanna on the property this year (used to have 3 regulars that cruised the area)

We are concerned for the treefrogs as we noticed that frog activity last year commenced upon the first rains (storms) However the rains were not close enough together to enable water to be held long enough for tadpoles to mature. All this while the mongrel Canetoads sat watching & waiting until about January as if they knew it was fruitless to spawn until then.

Good Luck Darwin......now the Pollies jump up & down!
That Berrimah line! I remember it well :-) Just like when the Toads hit Borroloola....it's a million miles away from Katherine.
My theory is to let them go in Darwin & Kakadu so there is a gradual influence instead of the Tsunami crashing wave that is about to sweep through. Want to borrow a few?? See screensavers page for photos.
