The original Knotts Crossing, Katherine River

Situated at the rear of the Katherine Hospital on the Gorge road it is another very accessible swimming spot.

Another original crossing area for travelers on horseback in the early 1900’s, and then vehicles (We went across the River here a few times in a vehicle before it was closed to traffic during the 90’s). All in the name of River Management and erosion control, and besides there is a Katherine bridge nowadays.

The conditions you see in the photo are typical for the Dry Season (taken in the middle of the year , July)

Knotts crossing is pretty well a big weir holding back the Katherine River, allowing it to cascade over this weir into the shallow sandy pool at its base. An even better place to bring the kids to have a paddle in the shallows at its base.

You can wander downstream or upstream following the River and look for your own little piece of secluded paradise.

Quite a nice area to paddle the canoe in. Put your canoe in here and get picked up at the High Level Bridge (in Town) or a few kilometres farther down to the Katherine Low Level .

I've always thought the Red Cross Canoe Marathon should start from here just to watch everyone scramble through the narrow neck downstream, gaining a lot more viewing areas of the race through the town.
