Flora River Katherine NT
The most magical river in the Katherine
Region (when seen via canoe)
Spring water they should bottle.
Not suitable for swimming in as in April
2005, a rather large saltwater crocodile was removed just down a
bit from the campground. It is a real pity. |
 |
Located 125km from Katherine, 90 km along the
Victoria Highway to the turn off with the last 35 km access on a formed dirt
road. It may not be suitable for
caravans until the grader has been through (May/June).
Viewing the river can be
disappointing from the bank, as there is alot of vegetation along the riverbank.
You can still capture the beauty of the river, however the best way
is to get out onto the river in a canoe and have a look from the middle. There
is a nice little walk from the campground through the vegetation to a viewing
point that looks out over several of the many waterfalls along the Flora River.

The Flora River is made up of
Tufa Dams (like asian rice paddys on a hillside). These Tufa dams are caused by Lime
build up from the spring water forming a lip or dam across the path of the river
, building up over the years and redirecting the water flow into many dozens of
waterfalls all the way down the river. |

The Flora River would have to be the prettiest River in the Katherine Region.
Created from massive amounts of Spring water bubbling from the depths of the
Earth , it cuts its way through the Northern Territory bush encouraging unique
growth along its banks that you do not see along the usual seasonal rivers.

Kathleen Falls at the Flora River campground
The campground is also a gem, nice showers & toilets,
not being heavily frequented by tourist traffic, so if you are lucky
when you visit, you may share the beauty of the Flora with only a few.

water as we paddled along.
